Natural Stone

“Bringing Nature's Beauty Into Your Home”

Ancient as the earth itself; made from the very same gas and liquid that solidified to form the earth, natural stone brings grace to many architectural wonders from the dawn of civilization to the present day. From ancient monuments like the pyramids in Egypt and the majestic splendor of the Greek and Roman architecture to the great civilizations of India and China, and right through the Renaissance period, natural stone is no longer the preserve of royalty and the affluent today. Popular, as never before, more people use natural stone today. After all, it has withstood the ravages of time over the last 4 billion years. Considering the fact that natural stone is as old as creation, as ancient as time and space as we know it, you cannot but feel a sense of awe at the marvel and beauty of its creation. Since the Egyptians first used granite and limestone, nearly 5000 years ago, the use of natural stone, its quarrying, fabrication and technical testing have only improved and become more sophisticated over the millennia, making it an affordable, attractive and feasible alternative.

What is Natural Stone?

A wonder in itself, natural stone traces its origins to heavy minerals pushed deep to the core by the earth’s crust when gas and liquid cooled to form a solid core. When the crust grew thicker, bearing pressure upon the inner core, generated heat from mineral vapors crystallized into solid forms. As the earth’s crust began to grow and erode, it pushed minerals up from its core, forming massive rock deposits –the quarries we use today to mine natural stone like granite and marble. The entire journey took no less than 100 million years!

Granite is an igneous rock originating from the slow crystallization of molten magma cooling deep beneath the Earth's surface. The three main minerals easily recognized in granite are feldspar, mica, and quartz. It is the varying color and density of each of these minerals along with differences in their cooling times which combine together to give the many different surface appearances of the rock, depending on where in the world it is quarried. Moreover, being homogenous in composition, igneous rocks are said to be 'massive' unlike sedimentary rocks which are composed in layers or beds of varying thickness. These qualities make granite the hardest, strongest and most durable of all building stone.

Marble is simply a limestone that has been compressed and or heated deep within the earth's crust. Unlike Granite, Marble was never a molten rock, but may have been heated and squeezed enough for the limestone grains to bend and flow through it. Marble is made of medium density material suitable for uses on Bathroom, Vanity, Fire Place Facings, Table Tops including Floors or Walls. The beauty of Marble has long been recognized as the material of choice with unlimited workability. A multiple of colors and patterns make this natural stone the perfect stone for all time to come.

Care & Cleaning…

Natural stone's durability has been tested throughout the ages—in homes, commercial buildings, cathedrals, and even pyramids. Use the following care tips to ensure that your stone will not only last, but will stay beautiful. Clean with warm water and a pH neutral soap like (nothing acidic) as often as necessary. Always test cleaners and sealers on a small, inconspicuous area in order to achieve desired results.

Sealing natural stone is a simple process that prevents staining and maintains stone's beauty. A sealer penetrates the surface to protect against moisture, dirt, and stains. Before sealing, a thorough cleaning is recommended to avoid sealing dirt and grease into the stone.

How Often Should Stone Be Sealed?

In order to determine if your stone should be sealed, sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water pools on the surface, your stone does not need to be sealed. If the water soaks into the surface, sealing is recommended. We always advise sealing natural stone after installation.
